The name Iyengar Yoga comes from the yoga teacher B.K.S Iyengar (14.12.1918 -20.8.2014). B.K.S Iyengar had a profound influence on yoga becoming the global practice that it is today. He wrote many yoga books such as 'Light on Yoga' that detail the practice of yoga and the effects of this practice. He established the Ramamani Iyengar Memorial Institute in Pune that yoga teachers and students from the around the world have visited.
This traditional path of yoga covers all aspects of yoga from the physical practice, to understanding of the breath and meditation. Iyengar Yoga classes can include standing poses, sitting, twists, backbends, forward bends, balancing poses, inverted, & restorative poses. The pace of an Iyengar class is varied and can depend on the level of the class, type of poses being taught or can be modified if you have an injury. We may use blocks, straps, bolsters and ropes in class to modify yoga poses if needed. Some weeks may be fast paced, and other weeks may have more restorative poses.
Iyengar Yoga has a focus on alignment, sequencing and timing in yoga poses in order to gain the most benefit out of the practice. During class you may be given a block, strap or bolster to further assist in developing or supporting your yoga practice.
All Iyengar Yoga teachers go through many years of training and have a personal yoga practice where they continue to develop their skills. In Australia all Iyengar Yoga teachers are certified through the Iyengar Yoga Association of Australia.
